GSI Group Receives Top Supplier
Award from Samsung Electronics

WILMINGTON, MA, January 2005 — For the third year in a row, GSI Group Inc. (Nasdaq: GSLI and TSX: GSI) has been recognized by Samsung Electronics as one of its top 20 worldwide equipment suppliers. This award was presented to GSI Group at Samsung’s recent 2004 supplier appreciation day. The award was from Chang-Gyu Hwang, Ph.D., President and CEO of Semiconductor Business, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

GSI Group was selected for supplying Samsung with its leading technology WaferRepair™ system, used by Samsung to dramatically improve yield during the semiconductor production.
